5Great multi room receiverDec 04, 2008
By The Big OM
I purchased this receiver because I could hook up four pairs of speakers to it; my house is wired in four different areas outdoors to this unit, which is inside, and it works great. The remote control allows you to choose which speakers are turned on. I use it with an Apple Airport Express to wirelessly stream music to it from iTunes on my Mac, which works great for listening to internet radio or your stored music via iTunes as well. Plenty of power to get full rich sound everywhere. None of the big box stores had anything like this. Recommended, and a good value too.

5Whole Home AudioOct 12, 2009
By T. Swanson "Trailblazer"
I just purchased 3 of these on Amazon for about $160 delivered and am using them to run 11 sets of speakers, mostly in wall and in ceiling speakers. I am thrilled with the sound and the 2 extra sets of speakers these can handle. In my setup, I run Audio out on my main Yamaha 1065 to the location that all of my in home speaker cables are terminated. I run Audio In to a RCA distribution Amp that I got on Amazon for under $70 and then out to each of the 3 receivers and out to the 11 sets of speakers I have inside and outside. I also picked up a Harmony IR remote and set it up so that I can control each receiver individually or as a group from anywhere in my home.

These are certainly no frills receivers, but for sheer audio output they are more than enough to handle my mostly JBL in wall and ceiling speakers. I can turn on my Yamaha, select CD, IPOD or Windows Media Center off my Xbox, pick up the Harmony Remote, press Power and 11 sets of speakers come on with whatever my Yamaha is playing, I love it. I looked into "whole home audio systems" and all I saw was $$$ I'm in to this for about $600 (not counting speakers) and I'm thrilled with it. Drawbacks - I cannot contol each set of speakers volume individually, but I set them up in a away that they are grouped so having the same volume to each set of speakers on each receiver is almost always what you would do anyway, plus you can carry that harmony remote in your pocket and adjust at will. Playing multiple sources in multiple locations may be a drawback for some, but I pretty much want the same thing playing where ever I am anyway, plus I can select different inputs on each receiver so this is not a big deal either.

I think the sound is crisp and bright, the receivers don't seem to get too hot after a full day of piping music around my house and they have so few options that it's not like you need a degree to turn on ABCD or any combination of speakers on each receiver.

If you have a audio only need to get speakers hooked up in multiple locations this is one of the best bargains I've run across.

4Sherwood ReceiverNov 12, 2007
By C. Farrell
Excellent product for pure music lovers. This is a natural stereo receiver for music aficionados. It is not a surround sound system but rather for those who want to get the best sound out of their CDs, albums, MP3s and cassettes. It handles two separate sets of speakers and delivers 100 watts per channel to each set. Excellent set-up for a whole house system.

4Probably not what you wantSep 25, 2011
By K and B
First, Sherwood makes some of the best receivers available, especially for the price. I only buy from them and skip the Sony (less quality), Yamaha (similar quality, more expensive), Onkyo, etc. But, this receiver is not the best for most people.

If you are like me, you want to drive a pair of speakers inside and a pair on your porch. You want the same music in and out. In this case, this is the wrong receiver. You want the RX-4109. It is an A/B receiver, which means you can listen to either or both pairs of speakers, with the same source. It is also easy to switch sources, as you click each set on or off.

This receiver is designed for dual zones, meaning different music in each zone. It supports 4 sets of speakers with 2 sources. It is cumbersome to setup the two zones. It is also cumbersome rotating between which speakers are on and off. So if you need to play different music in two rooms, or if you want to play in up to 4 rooms, you need this. If not, and you only want the same music in 2 rooms, then the RX-4109 is cheaper and easier.

1Not what they used to beOct 20, 2011
By Bruce H. "BH"
Updating this review to be fair. I bought this stereo and after a few days it stopped playing, I called Sherwood and they said the amp was probably blown due to hooking up the speakers by following the instructions diagram. Anyway, I was going to return it and then found some water dripped into it from a leaking pipe connection. I plugged it back in and it works, I'll be keeping this stereo BUT I'm still not happy with the way it's advertized. It is NOT four channels! "A" and "B" channels are actually ONE channel with enough jacks to hook up 4 pairs of speakers. "C" and "D" is the other CHANNEL that does the same. If you want to hook up 4 speakers like a regular 2 channel stereo then hook 1 pair to "A" or "B" and the other pair to "C" or "D". once you have 4 speakers going thats basically it, using the remaining channels simply "parallels" the speakers just like if you ran 2 speakers off the same jack, you end up damaging the flea powered amp unless you play the stereo at "Low levels" whatever that means. So I'll just keep it but I regard it a very low quality stereo with misleading advertisment. Save yourself the aggravation and just get a quality 2 channel stereo and then get a speaker impedance matcher/switcher from Radio Shack to run additional speakers.
