5Very pleased with Amazon!Aug 01, 2008
By M. Moyer
I purchased 10 place settings of this 4 piece Mikasa Swirl stoneware. I like the dishes a lot. The mugs hold 18 ounces. The cereal bowls are very attractive with an irregular shape to them and they hold at least 16 ounces. The dinner place and salad plate are made attractive by having a combination of a glazed surface where food would be placed, and a matte swirled stoneware finish around the edges. As I said, I like these dishes a lot. What I didn't mention was that I watched the price Amazon listed them for as it sometimes went up, and sometimes went down. When I did finally purchase my sets, I got them for a great price of $23.61 a set!

The problem with these sets of dishes, however, is that the way Mikasa packages the 4 piece settings, the salad plate got broken in shipping. This happened in 5 out of the 10 sets I ordered. Amazon was great and sent out additonal sets to replace the broken salad plates, but these, too, often arrived broken. Eventually, I did receive enough sets, unbroken, to make the original 10 sets I had ordered. Luckily, these dishes were for my own use, and I was in no particular hurry for them. If I had been buying these as a gift, the lost time waiting for additional sets to be sent might have been a problem.

I was very impressed with the way Amazon handled the issue. I could tell from the way the boxes arrived, that Amazon was packaging their part of the shipment fine, it was an error on Mikasa's part.

Just one more reason why I will continue to try to purchase what I can from Amazon as long as they continue to offer products at a good price!

5Wonderful!Jan 03, 2008

I love this set. It is unique. I haven't used it yet. Just unboxed & washed it in the dishwasher. I had to re-arrange all of my cabinets to make room for it. Also purchased the swirl glassware which I love also. They compliment each other very well. Saving this set for special occasions & or company. (Still using my old dinnerware at this time). I especially like the 2 tone finish on this set. Very nice.

5I highly recommend this set, together with a serving set, don't buy single pieces!Nov 12, 2008

This is a very nice design, I like it a lot: matte glaze on the outside, no other ornaments. Sleek and simple, yet elegant enough for guests and parties. I own the creamer and the sugar bowl in tan finish, which I bought separately a year ago to replace my broken pieces from another big tableware set.

I guess tan is no longer in fashion, so tan sets and accessories are on sale, unlike white and black.

It doesn't make sense, when sets go on big sale and single pieces separately cost far more than a set containing all these pieces. Sales of collections/series should be more consistent. This "Mikasa Swirl 4-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1" in tan is now offered for just $18.60, with single pieces priced higher than the entire set!

There is more nonsense in this design current pricing, e.g. "Mikasa Swirl 5-Piece Serving Set", now for $40.48, contains a 12" Platter offered for $39.99, a Vegetable Bowl for $34.99, a Creamer for $21.99, and a Sugar Bowl for $27.99 (the 5th piece is the sugar bowl lid). Needless to say, I am buying the set, so I have the platter and a vegetable bowl, together with a jam bowl and milk server, in addition to my sugar bowl and creamer.

In another review I read that this 4-Piece Place Setting is packaged insufficiently by Mikasa or they were all mishandled in the warehouse and very often (50%) arrive with one broken plate, regardless of double packaging by Amazon. So it may be difficult to complete the set when the dishes go on 78% sale.

5love them!Nov 30, 2009

We got these as our day china for our wedding registry over a year ago. While a plate or two has chipped, thanks to our use, they have held up really well and look GREAT. We registered for half black and half white plates, bowls, etc, and the combo looks lovely in different settings. It's also great to put them right in the oven!

My husband and I have 12 place settings that we've been using for a year and a half. I love them and would recommend them to anyone looking for beautiful, casual dinnerware. We've yet to break or chip a single piece, and I'm constantly bumping them around in the dishwasher and cabinets. I ordered some sets from Bed Bath & Beyond and some from Amazon. As other reviewers mentioned, two of my twelve sets (both from BB&B) arrived with broken salad plates, and the sets had to be returned.
