Versatility Plus!Nov 13, 2000
By Elizabeth M Klym I've owned many sets of dishes in my time (as my husband will attest!). Some I purchased because they had a lovely pattern, some because they were "elegant", some to take the "wear and tear" of everyday life and of course, one set because it was inexpensive (cheap, actually). They all, eventually, made their way into the Goodwill box. Today I own Mikasa French Countryside. When I went shopping for yet another set of dishes, I decided to find one that had a great pattern, was elegant, was sturdy enough for everyday wear and tear and was relatively inexpensive. Lo and behold! I came across French Countryside and my heart was sold! This pattern is simple, and the solid white is plain, yet can be enhanced by cloth and napkins for any given holiday. The additional serving pieces are "lifesized" but not fragile. They bear up under the stress of the dishwasher, but most of all, I love the versatility! With the Holidays coming up, I can set a beautiful Thanksgiving table using fall colors of gold, tan and cream. For Christmas, the cloth is white or green, the napkins green and red plaid! (Beautiful with Winterberry accessories!) My table is very elegant when set with gold candlesticks, a crystal bowl of brightly colored Xmas balls, a crisp white tablecloth and red and gold cloth napkins! French Countryside is truly a "set for all seasons"! It will be the last set of dishes I own!

These dishes have everything....May 05, 2002
By Avid reader I've owned numerous sets of dishes over the years (too many!). No one type seemed to have everything - durability, beauty, versatility, attractive serving pieces, reasonable price. Then I found French Countryside, and invested in a set. I was first drawn to these dishes by the graceful design. It is pretty, but casual. These dishes look equally at home in the kitchen or the dining room. I liked the weight of the dishes; I thought they would be durable, and in fact, in six years of daily use we have not been able to chip a single piece! The fact that they are stonewear is a plus; this dishes retain heat well and can be kept warm in the oven. For me, an important factor in choosing dishes is the size and shape of the cereal and soup bowls. In many sets, these pieces are too small to be practical. But the French Countryside bowls are just right - the perfect size for their purpose. The coffee cups are also a nice size and shape. And there are coffee mugs which you can buy, as well. I love the color - neither stark white nor too creamy - they are a basic white that will go with anything. At Christmas, they mix well with red or green. You can also get all of the accessories you need in this pattern. The price is extremely reasonable, too. There isn't a thing I don't like about them - I only wish I had found them sooner!

Great DishesJul 14, 2004
By Stanley B I'm a young graduate student, i'm a guy, and i'm single. Dishes are the last thing on my mind. But one summer i was subletting a place with my buddies, and the people left most of their stuff there for us to use, including the dishes. They were French Countryside by Mikasa. And I fell in love with a set of dishes. What I love about it is the weight. This is the heaviest and most sturdy set of dishes i've ever used. It does not feel flimsy, which is what everything else feels like in comparison. Like I said, I never paid attention to stuff like this before, but I got me a set as soon as I moved from that place. As well, the pieces are really simple-looking, not gaudy or anything like that. In a word, this set is sturdy. I love it. Go out and buy yourself a set, or check it out at the local Mikasa store first. Prices on amazon are better though.

12 years of everyday use.Dec 08, 2003
I too find this to be a classic set. I'm afraid after 12 yrs. of usage; by two adults, the most heavily used (salad plates) are cracking and breaking up. I have used them in the microwave. And I believe this was their downfall. Do I still want them? Yes They suite us very well.

Versatile!Jan 11, 2007
By J. Gonia Why worry about where you are going to store that china to be used only on special occassions? While this simple but elegant pattern can be used on special occassions and holidays, it is durable enough to be used on a daily basis.
