works well with some limitationsAug 31, 2010 Worked fine for me. I didn't have any problems with it pairing. I didn't test the "distance" because it worked from my deck to my dining area and that is all I needed. I would like to bring it to my bedroom so I'm going to run some tests and maybe do the antenna mod that is on the net to boost the signal. The smoking results were very good so I believe the temperature was quite accurate.
So far so goodAug 27, 2010 Pro's- seems to be working as advertised so far. No problems with it.
Con's - Should come standard with the 6 foot probes.
Limited RangeAug 24, 2010 This thermometer works well, though there are 3 things I don't like about it.
The first thing is that the range is limited. The wireless signal is blocked by glass, so with my smoker 20 feet away and in sight through a sliding glass door the signal does not get through when the door is closed. I've worked around that by putting the receiver on the other side of the glass door; I can read the temperature through the glass.
The second thing is related to the first. There is no indication that the receiver hasn't received a signal for a while. What happens is that the temperatures shown are stale and can be way off. There is a radio telescope icon that flashes when the unit receives an update from the remote unit but noticing that there is no connection requires staring at the screen for 10 or 20 seconds.
The third thing is that the switch to turn the remote unit on is inside the battery compartment. To turn the unit on (or off) you need to remove the plastic clip that holds the hanger, open the battery compartment and flip the switch. This is rather inconvenient.
However, even with those issues, having a thermometer that reads remotely so that I don't have to go outside and look at the smoker every few minutes is a huge step saver!
There are directions on the internet for increasing the range of the transmitter by making a better antenna. I have not tried that approach.
WORKS GREATAug 13, 2010 THIS IS ONE OF TWO THERMOMETERS THAT I BOUGHT. YES MOST OF THE REVIEWS ABOUT DESIGN ARE TRUE, BUT IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT TO OPERATE. I HAVE USED IT FOUR TIMES NOW AND IT WORKS GREAT. BUY IT!
The Professor of ThermosJul 28, 2010 This little device has opened the world of grilling for all to see. The first rule of the Knights of the Round Grills is Temp, Temp, Temp...and this one is awesome.
With both dome and meat probes, it gives you real time info via a wireless connection to the base transmitter. It has max temp alarms for both meat and dome and a timer.
You will learn more about your grill temp in 1 session of grilling than you have to date.
This turns grilling into tactical application of fire to achieve perfect meat.
I give this little number an 'All of the stars in the sky' review, but they only gave me 5, so I am going with that.
Buy. It. Now.
