5Great!Apr 27, 2009
By S. Debow
I really like this product. I was concerned, after reading some reviews on Butter Bells and 'on the counter' storage of butter.

I have not had any problems with it. It holds more than one stick of butter, spreading the butter at room temp, is so nice and easy. We tend to use less of it, than when we had to try and spread butter, cold from the fridge.

All I have to do is change the water every couple of days, and I try and keep it off the counter directly over the dishwasher, or too close to any appliances that give off heat.

To fill, I set the wrapped stick of butter out on the counter for a while, until it gets soft, and I smush in the softened butter with a spoon. Using the back of the spoon, I make a concave area in the middle and make sure the butter touches the sides of the crock.

It is great and everyone who sees it, wants one!

I recommend it!

5Looks great, works wellAug 17, 2010

This is the second or third butter bell we've owned, as we keep accidentally breaking them, but it's the last model we'll ever buy. It looks great in the kitchen or on the table and the handle on the top is very convenient. Others I've owned made you grasp the edges of the lid top open them, which explains why they kept slipping out of our hands and breaking. As long as you remember to change the water every few days it will keep butter fresh for up to two weeks without refrigeration, and having soft spreadable butter for your toast or English muffin in the morning is, if not the best thing ever, at least a little nice.

As for previous reviews that said the butter falls out into the water, I've had this happen once in a while, but only very rarely. The trick is to make sure the crock is dry when you load it with butter, as any water on the inside walls will prevent the butter from sticking, and to pack it firmly. It also helps to soften the butter on the counter or in the microwave before you pack it into the crock, and if you're going to scoop some butter out and then put back the unused part, make sure it's soft and that you pack it firmly onto the butter that's already there or that extra little bit _will_ fall out easily.

5gatekeeper of the butterJun 27, 2009

This is my fourth butter bell and, by far, this one is the best of the lot; it's slightly larger than other bells and it's composed of very sturdy stoneware. In short, it's the bomb and well worth the few extra dollars.

2Doesn't store as much as it saysJul 06, 2010
By Jacob Sorensen
This is just the kind of thing we were looking for - a way to store butter at room temperature so it's easily spread, but protected so it doesn't go bad. The water doesn't really interfere with using the lid to spread butter, and it's not hard to remember to change the water when we run the dishwasher every 2-3 days. We hand wash this so I can't speak to whether it's really dishwasher-safe, but it seems sturdy and well-made. One thing to remember is that you can't just shove a stick of refrigerated butter in here; the butter must be packed into the cup so it sticks to the sides in order to prevent it falling out into the water when you want to use it. This means you have to let the butter come to room temperature before you pack it into the butter crock, and you have to pack it in well in order to make sure it sticks to the sides of the cup.

My one complaint about this product is that it simply doesn't store six ounces of butter like it says it does: one four-ounce stick of butter comes almost to the rim of the cup once you've packed it in firmly, so it really only stores four ounces. Considering I paid more for this one specifically because it stored the extra two ounces, I'm frustrated it doesn't store those extra two ounces like the description says.

2Disappointing and uselessFeb 15, 2009

Butter keeps falling in water unless you fill the butter cup to its maximum level, which is ridiculous as the amount will inevitably decrease as you use it. I do not have the patience to fill it up every time that I use it.
