5I love this spatula - won't meltOct 21, 2001
By Fred Jones "theotherwhitemeat"
Nothing quite like a melted spatula you left in chocolate or caramel a bit too long. This one won't melt - it's very sturdy but be warned "large" means LARGE. You can't stick it into a can of evaporated milk or tomato paste very well to scrape out the sides. I'd recommend buying both small and large - trust me you'll love both.

4Works like a charmJan 28, 2010

I use this spoon for baking. It helps mix the batter and move the batter from mixing bowl to pan beautifully, and it also doesn't get batter stuck all over it as it's silky silicone head makes the batter just glide off. If you'e ever battled with stiff scraping spoons that just seem to transfer the batter back and forth (and on to you!) you'll appreciate what a difference this makes. I didn't need it for high heat, though I have used it for sauteing vegetables as well, and it's worked just fine. I have the smaller size as well.

Edited to add that I use this daily to help get smoothies out of the machine. Having a spoon that food glides off is enormously helpful, and having gone through repeated uses/washings, this spoon looks as good as the day I bought it (a year ago? something like that)

5THE VERY BEST SPATULAMay 02, 2000
By David Mechals
The Le Creuset Spatulas are the very best I have ever used. They will withstand extreme temperatures and with the handle removeable it saves the wood and makes it last even longer. A very very good product. Everyone should have at least 4 in their kitchen!

3Why Does The Head Come Off So Easily?Aug 26, 2009
By Elizabeth "I always notice flowers"
UPDATE: At the time of this writing, the silicone is safe up to 482 degrees Fahrenheit (when I purchased, it was safe up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit. You may want to check with Le Creuset or look at the Amazon specs to make sure this doesn't change again.)

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I recently received this utensil and haven't used it yet. I noticed the head is loose and easily pulls off. The head was meant to be removable for cleaning, but it is too loose.

If I can pull it off so easily, it stands to reason that if it is stuck in mashed potatoes, it will come off in the pot.

I have not washed this silicone head in a dishwasher (even though the head is dishwasher safe, but not the handle). I only wash things by hand. I don't know why it is loose, except it appears it was manufactured that way.

UPDATE Sept. 4 2009: I received a replacement from Le Creuset. The head on this one is definitely tighter. My plan is to disturb the head as little as possible by not ever removing it. A couple of stray pieces of silicone are right where the head meets the bamboo. I could try to cut them off with a utility knife, but I have chosen to leave them intact. I don't want to risk removing any stray pieces of silicone that, in the process of removing them, might somehow cause the head to loosen, so I am going to leave it as is.

Pros:

* Medium-to-shallow depth spoon shape very utilitarian for many kitchen tasks
* Will not scratch your stainless steel, hard anodized, or nonstick cookware
* Heat resistant up to 482 degrees Fahrenheit
* Stay cool bamboo handles
* Silicone utensils are recommended by some manufacturers of stainless cookware, like All-Clad and Cuisinart, to keep from scratching stainless steel cookware. They also work great with nonstick cookware and hard anodized cookware. Check with your cookware manufacturer to see what type of utensils they recommend.

Cons:

* Removable head (which may be a plus for some people) overly loose on some of the individual spoons; check yours when you receive it. While some people will appreciate that the head is removable, you don't want it to come off too easily.

* Possible "stray" pieces of silicone around head

As for hand washing the bamboo handle, do not soak the handle for an extended period of time, as wood will swell and it is not good for it. A short soak is okay. I briefly run mine under soapy water. That is how I clean the head as well, and scrub it with a kitchen scrubber.

Overall, a beautiful utensil by Le Creuset. Just double-check that the head is on nice and tight. I have really enjoyed using this one. I would change the rating to 4 stars since the head on the replacement is tighter.

1Misrepresented -- DisappointedJan 19, 2010
By AKR Hype "Audrey"
Most my spatulas are heatproof to 500 degrees, and that isn't enough for some types of cooking, so I was thrilled to find one heatproof to 800 degrees. I bought more than one.

The description on this spatula states that it is heat resistant to 800 degrees. When I received the product, it had a sticker on it stating it was only heatproof to 482 degrees F. I am really disappointed, as I wanted a high heatproof spatula-spoon.

This has been misrepresented and I suggest that the product description be corrected so this does not happen to anyone else.
