Great AttachmentJul 31, 2010 I LOVE my KitchenAid stand mixer and have only had the Food Grinder Attachment for a short time, but so far am very happy with it. I have limited counter space but do keep the mixer out because I make bread often. The Grinder attachment is quick and easy to set up. The only problem I've found is that it's a little difficult to get it pushed all the way in when attaching it - make sure it clicks before you tighten the screw. I think that may get better as the 'newness' wears off. So far I've found it easy to clean. I use a bottle brush to get the inside clean and also read a tip somewhere about putting a slice of bread through it after grinding meat or other 'sticky stuff.' That works great. Am looking forward to trying other attachments to get the most out of my stand mixer.

Too much stress on the motorJul 27, 2010 This grinder attachment is OK if you're only making small batches (less than 15 pounds) of sausage and if you only use it once or twice a year. But if you make larger batches or if you use it more often, you should invest in a real stand-alone meat grinder.
I've made my own sausage at home for about ten years now, and this poor grinder attachment just isn't up to the job. I finally ended up having to replace my wife's stand mixer and buy my own grinder.
A stand-alone grinder is much easier to use and much simpler to clean.
Same goes for stuffing. A hand-cranked canister stuffer is much easier to work with.

Solid Grinder, but stuffing sausages is quite a chore...Jul 26, 2010 I decided to purchase this attachment after receiving a Kitchenaid mixer for a housewarming present, this along with the sausage stuffer attachment was going to be part of an experiment to see if it worked better than my Waring Pro countertop sausage grinder.
Assembly of the kit was very easy, the whole set comes in just a few parts which are quite simple to put together and latch onto the machine.
I decided I'd try a chicken/pork smoked sausage to christen this new grinder and see how it went. Well firstly, the issue I ran into was that I had mistakenly put the blades on the wrong way! The meat was coming out as a slimy stringy mess and I was experiencing several clogging issues. This I suppose is a bit of a ding on it's part as my waring pro, having the exact same blades, included an insert explaining the proper way to mount the cutting blades. The fact that the grinder even allows the blades to be mounted incorrectly is a bit of a downer as well.
Nevertheless, I got the blades mounted properly and what was previously turning into a disaster resolved itself handily. The meat began to grind properly, and I was able to power through 5lbs of pork and chicken rather quickly.
Unfortunately, this grinder proved to have similar problems to my Waring Pro with regards to stuffing. Overall, the Kitchenaid is slightly better than the Waring simply because the Kitchenaid does not grind the meat twice when stuffing it. You can actually remove the grind plate and simply install a feed guide and tube to stuff the sausage. The benefits sadly, end there.
Both suffer feed issues with large amounts of meat, particularly if it was lean with any decent amount of Gristle. The augur simply can't push the meat efficiently enough, and the plastic plunger they include with the grinder is quite frankly pretty poor with regards to making sure the stuffing gets through efficiently.
I strongly suggest purchasing a seperate Sausage Stuffer device if you plan on regularly making sausage or making more than 5lbs at a time. The feed mechanism with regards to stuffing is so slow and ponderous, it makes stuffing sausages more of a chore than it should be.

Amazingly FAST Shipping!Jul 26, 2010 I ordered this on a Saturday evening, about 10pm and chose free shipping. It arrived the following Monday by USPS before Noon. Amazingly fast shipping since the ETA was Wednesday. Amazingly fast shipping ordering from Santa Monica, California.
My grinder came with a plastic plunger that also acts as a wrench to tighten the front down, not the wooden plunger shown in the image. No gripes from me!

For the Perfect, Germ Free, Delicious BurgerJul 19, 2010 If you want the perfect burger and don't want to hear disgusting stories about what's in the chopped meat you buy, buy this grinder. Easy to use- we now grind our own burger meat, and WOW what a difference. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it isn't. With this grinder, it's all of maybe fifteen minutes -- and when you see what chopped meat SHOULD look like, you'll never go back to store bought again.
